James 4:10
“Humble yourself before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.”
Humility is a character quality that God considers of supreme value. The Word tells us that the Lord, honors, blesses, and favors those who are legitimately humble. It involves modest self-perception and is the direct opposite of pride and arrogance. The Bible tells us that humility is the proper posture people ought to have with God. The Hebrew word for humility carries the idea of crouching down, bowing low to the ground or being afflicted. There are several terms in the Greek that communicate the concept of humility: submissiveness, abasement, meekness, modesty of character, neediness, lowliness, and smallness to mention a few. Selfish ambition and vain conceit are not compatible with humility. Through inner transformation by the Holy Spirit’s power, we change from our old sinful selves to the image of Christ. True humility means seeing ourselves with all the worth and worthiness that God imputes to us, but with no more value than anyone else. Placing God at the first place in our lives and submitting to him and note him as our first place of authority and being willing to serve others, we practice sincere humility. Are you humble?
Dear God, help me to be humble and not full of myself. Please give me the strength to release to you and allow you to be my authority. Help me serve others not out of a need to be recognized but to be humble before them. Allow me to do your work to help others. Thank you for always being on my side even when I might not get it right. I pray all this in your sons’ name, Amen.
