Romans 7:15

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”

In this verse Paul shares three lessons that he learned:

Knowledge of the rule does not make it easier to obey them.

  1. Self-determination and self-improvement cannot change our hearts.
  2. Becoming a Christian does not stamp out all the sin and temptation from a person’s life.

What does this mean for us? It means that we can be born again in a moment of faith, but to become Christlike is a lifelong process. Paul emphasizes that no matter what we do, our self-determination and self-improvement cannot change our hearts. It is only the Holy Spirit that can change your heart. You must accept Jesus as your savior, in order to receive the ability to change your heart. We cannot earn it through good behavior. Do you accept Jesus as your savior?

Dear God, thank you that you want the best for me. And that you help me to continue to grow through your Word, prayer and the Holy Spirit. Give me your knowledge and strength to help others realize who you are. Thank you for your love. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
