Ephesians 2:19-22
“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”
The church is sometimes referred to as a building, as God’s house. However, in reality his house in not a building but a group of people. It is in us that he lives and is watching the world through us. People can see God’s love through us, as we live in harmony with God and one another. We are citizens of God’s kingdom, and we are members of his household. What does it mean that we are built on the foundation of apostles and prophets? It means that the church is not built on new, modern ideas, but on the spiritual heritage given to us by the apostles and prophets and their faith. The knowledge they had of how God worked in the Old Testament, their experience with the risen Christ and their recollection of Jesus’ teachings. Do you know your heritage?
Dear God, thank you for my heritage. Help me to understand the knowledge that the apostles and prophets had and give me the strength to share that knowledge. Thank you for your love for me. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
