Philippians 2:3-4
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.”
We are to lay aside selfishness and treat others with respect and common courtesy. It is important that we humble ourselves not putting on airs, making others feel jealous or hurt. Considering others, we should put them above our own self, by doing this it links us to Christ. God has given us others as a gift. What would it be like if no one thought of others above themselves? Would life still look the same? I doubt it. What would happen to that neighbor who finds herself in need of help? Dr. Thomas Winger says in his commentary on Ephesians, ‘We are not free to choose which consequences of the Gospel we would like for our lives.’ We might find ourselves in some boring situations helping others but a person is worth more than being a famous singer, or the best at playing games. Helping those that God has given to us as gifts, is something we can do in good conscious. Is God asking you to help someone or put their needs above your own?
Dear God, thank you that you care so much for your people that you would want us to help each other. Give me the wisdom to know when someone needs help, give me your eyes to see those around me in need of you. Help me to always be in the present, not the past nor the future, help me to put others above myself. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
