John 14:15-17
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask my Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
These verses tell us that Jesus was preparing his disciples for him leaving them soon. But even so a part of him would remain with them, the Holy Spirit. How can this be? As soon as Jesus was gone the Advocate, the Spirit of God himself, would come to them. He would comfort, encourage, guide, and intercede for them. The Spirits regenerating power came to the disciples just before Jesus’ ascension and the Spirit was poured out on all the believers at Pentecost. This happened shortly after Jesus ascended into heaven. What does this mean for us? Those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit fills us and lives with us to help us to live as God wants us to. He also helps to build the church on earth. This is by faith that we have access to the Holy Spirit’s power every day. What do you need the Holy Spirit to help you with today?
Dear God, thank you that you gave us your Spirit to live with and in us. Help me to recognize when He is trying to work in my life and give me courage to allow him to work. Give me your eyes and ears to help others learn about your love and the Holy Spirit that is available to each of us that turn our lives over to you. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
