1 John 2:9-11

“Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone wo hates his brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in darkness. The do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.”

In today’s world it is easy to fall into the trap of hatred. We see things around us that make us mad, and we know is unjust. However, to hate someone because of what they believe or do is not what God wants for us. Does that mean we have to like everyone or like what they do? No! Does it mean we are not a Christian? No! There will always be people we enjoy more than others. In these verses, John is focusing on the attitude of ignoring or despising others, treating them as irritants, enemies, competitors, or outsiders. Christian love is not a feeling but a choice which leads to action. We can choose to be concerned for others well-being and treat them with respect. This is whether we feel affection for them. As we express our love for others, our attitudes will begin to change. Where do you need to show love today?

Dear God, thank you for loving me. Help me to love others as you love me. Give me courage to show others your love and affection. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
